Ways to fight depression without medication

When people are diagnosed with depression they may feel that the only treatment is antidepressants medication but there are many ways to fight depression without medication.

Here are some alternatives you can try:

Get into a routine

When people experience depression one day can melt into the next.  Setting a daily schedule can really help you to get on track.

Exercise is a wonderful aid in the treatment of depression. It works by releasing feel-good endorphins into the body which improves mood.

Studies have shown that exercise can be just as effective as antidepressants in helping depression and it doesn’t have any of the annoying side effects.  Exercising outside also provides exposure to sunlight which can increase serotonin levels.

Eat healthy

There is evidence that foods with omega-3 fatty acids (such as salmon and tuna) folic acid (like spinach and avocado) as well as cashews and walnuts are great depression-busting foods.

Take on responsibilities

When people are feeling depressed they can withdraw from life.  It is really important to be involved in daily responsibilities as they can give you a sense of accomplishment and purpose.

Challenge negative thoughts

Dealing with the noise that is in your head is so important.  Engage with a professional to learn how to challenge negative thoughts and beliefs.

Nutritional supplements

There is now evidence that some nutritional supplements really assist with the treatment of depression.   B-complex vitamins play a key role in breaking down the production of neuro chemicals, which helps create serotonin. Folic acid and vitamin B6, in particular, help support the clearing of stress hormones by the liver.  Also check out my article on food to help your mood.

Always check with your doctor before starting any supplement, especially if you’re already taking medications as some can cause harm if taken with antidepressants.
