Parents are seeking help in relation to their children on an unprecedented scale and there is a ton of information available most of which is overwhelming, confusing or contradicting. I think parents today are really afraid of ‘getting it wrong’ when it comes to raising their kids.
Twenty years ago I had my first child, I’ve got four now aged 19 to 12 years. I had no idea what I was getting into, having a child is one of the most rewarding and challenging things I have ever done. When my mother had me there was probably a couple of books that helped with what to expect and how to raise well-adjusted happy kids.
I get calls from parents every day telling me they are at their wits end, they have tried everything they can think of and still things are not going well.
Or that their child is really struggling with anxiety or depression, anger or, worse still, is self-harming and that they feel isolated and alone in trying to get appropriate treatment.
My experience is that most parents do the very best job they can in a very different parenting world to the one they were raised in.
So How Can I Help?
Common issues for which parents seek my help:
I am a parent coach and a child mental health specialist and have been working in the field for around ten years. If you would like to understand my approach take a good look around the website – there are specific areas you can check out about common childhood issues (child anger, child anxiety). Also there are heaps of articles I have written with advice about raising children, being a parent and taking care of yourself too.
I can provide short term solution focused parenting advice on a single issue over one or two appointments by telephone, skype or in person. You do not need a referral from a Dr to access this service and there is no Medicare rebate available.
Alternatively if the issue has been going on for some time or is more complex you can get a Mental Health Care Plan (if eligible) from your Dr to access ongoing psychotherapy which is provided in person at my Kenmore Clinic and allows for ten appointments that are Medicare subsidized. You need a referral to access this service.
You are able to contact me by email or telephone, and can book an appointment to see me using the schedule tab below.
